Know The story behind our existence

Our MIssion

To use African-inspired creativity and community-centered art programs to nurture courageous young minds, promote healing and wellbeing, and create sustainable opportunities for social and economic empowerment.

Our Vision

Rooted in African creativity, we envision communities where art restores dignity, strengthens identity, and inspires collective growth.

The Story Behind Our Existence?

Nkwaniliza Crafts was born quietly, in moments of spending time alone, curiosity, and creativity.

As an introvert growing up, I often found comfort in creating with my hands. Long before I understood what art meant, I was already living it. I decorated writing pads, cut flowers from old books, and even removed buttons from my clothes just to turn them into something new. Creativity became my safe space, a place where imagination, calmness, and self-expression met.

My artistic world expanded when I joined the University of Nairobi. The city exposed me to new ideas, materials, and possibilities. What started with simple manilla paper cards slowly evolved into bespoke handmade creations crafted with unique papers, textures, and detail. It was during this season that my mentor, Esther Njuguna, challenged me to make cards for her children and asked a simple question: “How much would you charge?”

That moment changed everything.

The Story Behind Our Existence

For the first time, I realized that something I deeply loved could also create value beyond passion. With little resources but immense determination, I began saving portions of my weekly transport and lunch money to buy craft tools; decorative scissors, craft punches, embellishments and cardstock. Every small purchase felt like investing in a dream I could not yet fully explain, even to myself.

Building Nkwaniliza Crafts was not instant. One of the greatest challenges was learning how to confidently speak about my art and invite others into the vision. Slowly, through exhibitions, handmade business cards, social media posts, referrals and consistent storytelling, the dream found its voice. One step at a time, what began as a personal creative escape grew into a purposeful platform.

Today, Nkwaniliza Crafts is evolving into something greater than handmade art. It is a community-centered creative movement rooted in African identity, healing, courage, and empowerment. We believe creativity is not only about making beautiful things but also about restoring dignity, nurturing confidence, strengthening communities and creating opportunities for transformation.

At the heart of our work is a simple belief:

Art has the power to heal, empower, and reconnect people to themselves and their communities.

Because through the creative process, we learn patience, resilience, self-awareness, calmness, and the courage to embrace the journey without chasing perfection.

PS: Nkwaniliza is a Ugandan word which simply means welcome/karibu, so feel welcome to our creative world herein
